The Western Amateur Astronomers has awarded the G Bruce Blair Award for 2009 to Mike Simmons
The prestigious G. Bruce Blair Medal is awarded annually by the WAA
to an individual who has made truly outstanding contributions to amateur
astronomy. Mike is a well known amatuer from the SoCal area and is a past
President of the
Los Angeles Amateur Astronomers as well as a founder and past President
of the Mount Wilson Observatory Association.
Mike founded and is current President of Astronomers With Out Borders
and Co-chair of 100 Hours Of Astronomy, a cornerstone project of the IYA
2009.
The award was presented Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday May 23th during
the 2009
Riverside
Telescope Makers Conference-Astronomy Expo. at Big Bear,
California.
Our congratulations to Mike Simmons.
RTMC (Riverside Telescope Makers Conference) is held yearly during
Memorial Day weekend, at Y.M.C.A."Camp Oaks".
This is located about 50 miles northeast of Riverside in the San Bernardino
mountains east of Big Bear Lake.
Follow Highway 38 east and north off Interstate 10 in Redlands. Take
Lake Williams Road about eight miles east of Big Bear City on Highway 38,
between mileposts 44 and 45. Follow the telescope and RTMC signs
from this intersection to the camp.
It is our sad duty to report the passing of Carter Roberts on April 24th, 2008
Carter was the Eastbay Astronomical Society's president for many years,
a friend to members of the
Mount DiabloAstronomical Society, involved with WAA, RTMC, AANC and
was active in the support of our hobby.
He was also an active participant in many solar eclipse expeditions and was awarded the G Bruce Blair Award in 2007.
Carter was also intimately involved with the relocation and planning of the new Chabot Space and Science Center.
He will be remembered and dearly missed by many.
